The Buffalo River Project
Near the mouth of the Buffalo River, in the Old First Ward, ground will soon be breaking on the Buffalo Riverfest Park.
The plans include docks, a pier, an observation tower, an outdoor stage, a large pavilion, smaller picnic pavilions, a concession stand with restrooms, and several gardens and trails.
Preliminary plans were unveiled at the project site during the kickoff of the 2006 Riverfest.
Schroeder, who appropriated funding for land acquisition, design, and construction of the Buffalo Riverfest Park also obtained funding for its counterpart upstream in West Seneca. The West Seneca Riverfront Park includes a boat launching ramp, nature trails, fishing areas, and an access road. “Once this project is completed, boaters will be able to navigate the river from West Seneca all the way to Lake Erie, or vice versa. The goal is to create as many access points on the river as we can,” said Schroeder. “That way, the river can be enjoyed better from both the land and the water.”

Seneca Street Redevelopment Project
It all started with a few flags hanging over a struggling business strip. Decades of decline had taken its toll on Seneca Street, once a bustling thoroughfare. But it was the dawn of a new century, and a new hope for Seneca Street. A chamber of commerce had opened its doors on the street, with an preliminary mission of filling up the vacant shops that had once been filled with bakeries, butcher shops, clothing stores, and other thriving businesses. People started to take notice, storefronts started filling up, and more plans began being put in place.
“The best is yet to come,” said New York State Assemblyman Mark J.F. Schroeder, standing in front of his Seneca Street District office, “This is the beginning of some major changes on this strip.”
Since his first day in public office, one of Schroeder’s top priority has been the revitalization of the area that was once called “Downtown South Buffalo.” He founded the Greater South Buffalo Chamber of Commerce in 2002 and located its office on Seneca Street. That same year he started the South Buffalo Education Center across the street, which started getting kids off the street corners and into the classroom to earn their GEDs. The City of Buffalo began helping business owners pay for improvements to their facades. And then newly elected Congressman Brian Higgins secured the funding that would do what he does best - get shovels in the ground.
